Portrait and self-portrait tips and writing your ideas.

2. Play with Eye Contact

It is amazing how much the direction of your subject’s eyes can impact an image. Most portraits have the subject looking down the lens – something that can create a real sense of connection between a subject and those viewing the image. But there are a couple of other things to try:

B. Looking within the frame – alternatively you could have your subject looking at something (or someone) within the frame. A child looking at a ball, a woman looking at her new baby, a man looking hungrily at a big plate of pasta…. When you give your subject something to look at that is inside the frame you create a second point of interest and a relationship between it and your primary subject. It also helps create ’story’ within the image.

1. Alter Your Perspective

Most portraits are taken with the camera at (or around) the eye level of the subject. While this is good common sense – completely changing the angle that you shoot from can give your portrait a real WOW factor.

THEN

Please write a paragraph telling me your plan for your portrait assignment. Answer the following questions: who will you shoot, where will you shoot, and what will you do to make the shot successful. Be specific on all three answers. When I read it I should know who and where you will take the photos and I should know exactly what your plan is to make sure you get not only good negatives, but a good print.

For my portrait i will be shooting myself, And probably Alex Herrera. We will most likely go downtown Austin,To parks,Gardans, take street photos,Abanded building. Etc. :P .To make this photo successful i will use the composition rules i learned this year.Looking for my lighting source and use good light ti the best of my ability.Make the backgrounds interesting.

Photos of the year 2009

I think they used the compilation rules lines. The light is the line conecting t the main subject. I thnk he made his oicture appealing by showing one light shining on the subject. The faceial exspresion on his face makes the setting of Ina nightclub or somethin.
I think the photographer made this picture more appealing by showing the lamb locked up i the cage with this random light shining in his face.I gus you could say maybe the photographer used the ciompistion rule bachround.Sence the light is randomly there witha black backround. I thnk the lam/goat just makes the picture great.

I like this picture because it makes you think.Like What the heck is this guy doing?
Haha I think to make this photo appealing he obviously stuck his neck in the fence not understanding why.I think the spray pain on the fence, and what the color blue the makes wearing. It makes the picture pop and more appealing.

1. What was your most favorite memory of your holiday break?
Hanging out with one of my close friends that i haven seen in awhile. It was pretty fun.

2. Did you go anywhere or do anything fun? If you did, please tell me. If not, tell me what you did do on break?I went to Colorado. It was fun! Bit i regret not taking my camera. its amazing over there.

3. When you look back at 2009, what do you think you will remember the most when your 25 years old? This can be worldly events, local things, personal achievements or events. Hrmmm.Finly leaveing paredes mmidxle school. Haha also getting my new camera and just the year in general was great.

I guess about 3-4 sentences each will be great.

Ethics in fashion photography .

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
Her eyes,Check bones,Neck Hair,Skin tones,Lips.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
Not in a photo that is being taken and printed out. There is no way to dramatically change someones appearance like that with camera. Else it has effects.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation? I think if shes a model,Shes naturally "good looking" and they sho7uldent have to manipulate so much.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Lighting,Texture,Skin tones,And Any other special effect that went/were groin along with the photo shoot.Things like Changeing face structure, eye color,Lips,Mouth, And nose is to much.People want to see reality. Not Fake stuff.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Fashion has to do with cloths, make up, It focusis on the person beautiy and fashion, showibng off the cloths for people to buy. Photojournalism is thickening picture of a subject thatch people want o know of.And writing about it.And shearing it with the world.
6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?

Photo Minipulation and ethics.

A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.
Its basically telling how a man monipulated a photo. He changed the original picture and used major editing.By adding people and etc.It all came down to him gitting fired.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.
I think that to much editing sucks.I think showing the photo the way it was taken help the reader or person viewing the photo imagine what was happening better.picture it better without tons of editing.its not realistic ,its not what really happened.

Print evaluation.

1.) Is anything in sharp focus?

basically no.The whole picture overall is focused in.

a.) Describe what is in focus and what is not.

basically no.The whole picture overall was one focus as i used the rule of thirds.

b.) If not in focus, state the cause.

Because i just try ed to focus the picture overall. Not on just the subject cause i was some what far away.

2.) Is there good contrast? (Look for the blacks and whites in the photo)?

The light and dark ares came out very well. It was indoors, with just a hint of sunlight. So as i took the picture Facing the little sun that was there came out nice, since i was facing it.

a.) If no, state the probable cause?

3.) Are all the rules followed? (Is the photo candid? Does the subject fill the frame? Does the photo contain action? Does it follow composition rules?)

I defiantly used the rule of thirds. As the boy was studying in the library,I but him in one center of the rule of thirds lines. There was'ent that much action but reading going on.the main subject did not fill the frame but by seeing him reading and the background of books helped fill in the the frame,Or picture.

a.) If yes, explain what techniques were used and how you followed them in your photo.
No my photo is not candid. If it was my main subject of the boy would fill up the picture. But instead there is a whole library in the background.

b.) If no, how will you correct this next time?
By getting up close.

4.) Is there yellowing or are there spots on the print?
]Not that i can see.

a.) If yes, what caused it/them?

5.) Are there print rings or spots?
Yes i have two rings.
a.) If yes, state the probable cause.
I absolutely have no idea why.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

1.I think that 6 of them came oout very well.

2.I think about 5.I think they probley didnt come out good qualitty beacuse when i took the pictures the lightinhg was probly bad.

3.I took a picture of a boy in the library doing work. The llighting was grait. i used the rule of thirds. And when i printed and prosesed it it turned out awsome.I think its cause the lighting and focus!

Marlboro Marine audio slideshow.

Watch the slide show, and answer the following on your blog:

A. What skills besides photography did Luis Sinco utilize to produce this slideshow? (Think about the overall presentation: audio, editing, text)

I think that by using the audio,He really can capture the audience attention by looking at the
pictures and feeling compassion towards him.One without the other (audio and photos) would help you feel as much sympathy as much as they do together.

B. What was the effect (added power or meaning) of the multimedia effects of the slideshow?

As i said in my answer above. I think the audio combined with the pictures makes it SO much more powerful. It helps you feel what he might have been feeling.
What emotions he was going through. What might have been going through his head. It helps 100% more

3. Think about the power of the overall piece.

A. What is the most powerful image from the slide show? Why?

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?

It would have to be the first pictures when he is in Iraq.It showed how his journey started. Why he is the way he is today. Why he wanted to commit subside. Why his marine came to an end. It all effected him till this very day.

C. How does the audio enhance the photographs?

I think without the audio It would not completely capture my attention.I think wwiht audio it help me and the audience feel more compassion and sympathy for him.It helps us as if we were in his shoes.

D. How do the images work together to tell a story?

Well for one there all in order from what happen everyday in his life. So they basically tell the story in order.they show his ups and downs. His week times and his strong and bold times. They all tell a real life story of an American solder.

Post shoot reflection.

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close.
It wasen't that challenging but the thing was,not knowing the person.
getting up close to a stranger was sort of hard.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I Was really tryingto getall my pictures with a perfect focus.I try'd to use the focus to the best of my ability. Taking advantage of it.

3. Explain how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques you learned in class while shooting.
I attempted to used rule of third for a for qwiet a bit of my pictures. For example in the libray,A boy reading a book with none around him. He was the main person in the picture.
he was in one of the intersects.

4. What would you do differently the next time you shoot to improve your photographs?
Take my time.
